Insemination is a painless procedure during which, prepared sperm is injected inside the uterine cavity.
Indications for IUI are mild male infertility, abnormal cervical mucus or unexplained infertility.
In order to perform this procedure both fallopian tubes must be patent and adequate sperm has to be present. Sperm preparation takes place in the laboratory (called sperm processing or sperm washing) and is separated from the other components of the semen and concentrated in a small volume. Sperm processing takes about 30-60 min after which the specimen consists of a purified fraction of highly motile sperm.
IUI is combined with ovulation induction and is performed 24-36 hours after the injection of human horionic gonadotropin (b- HCG ). That method when used in selected cases, provides good results.
