Medical Treatment

In cases of infertility due to irregularities of the menstrual cycle, anovulatory cycles, endometriosis, fibroids, abnormal mucus and sperm abnormalities, medical treatment may prove valuable.

  • Women suffering from ovulation and menstrual cycle irregularities, are given hormonal agents in order to achieve ovulation, maximizing the chance for a succesful pregnancy. Follow-up of follicle development is possible under ultrasound guidance. Once follicles reach an adequate size, chorionic human gonadotropin is given, which makes final maturation and ovulation possible.
  • Depending on disease stage, women suffering from endometriosis could be treated by administration of hormonal agents. Applying this mode of treatment ovarian function is blocked and cessation of menses is achieved for approximately 6-8 months leading to atrophy and shrinkage of endometriotic implants.
  • Women with  symptomatic uterine fibroids are administered hormonal agents in order to reduce their size prior to surgical treatment.
  • Hormonal treatment or antibiotics can be given in order to increase the cervical mucus quantity and quality and sperm quality as well.
