Transvaginal oocyte retrieval complications
Ultrasound- guided oocyte retrieval is a relatively easy procedure which is performed worldwide. It has the advantage of accurate viewing of the great pelvic vessels and ovarian follicles, and collection of almost all of the oocytes. Although usually atraumatic, there are a few complications. The patient starting an IVF cycle should be aware of those complications.
The oocyte retrieval needle may cause vaginal bleeding (0-1.3%), or rupture of internal vessels (internal bleeding). Bowel can also be damaged. Sometimes, pelvic infection may develop. Those complications are rare and treatment is successful with accurate diagnosis and treatment.
