GIFT (Gamete Intra Fallopian Transfer) is a modification of the IVF/ET approach, for which, at least one fallopian tube should be patent and good sperm quality (sperm count and motility) is required.
GIFT is indicated mainly for unexplained infertility and mild endometriosis.
Ovarian stimulation and oocyte retrieval are performed as in IVF, but fertilization is not achieved in vitro. Oocytes together with sperm are placed laparoscopically into the fallopian tube and fertilization occurs in vivo.
This procedure is performed laparoscopically at the hospital under general anesthesia. The patient goes home the same day. Recovery is short.
