FISH technique for detection of numerical chromosome abnormalities

PGD offers chromosomal screening, through FISH technique, prior to transfer and implantation to the endometrium.

Blastomeres analyzed using FISH technique

Such indications include:

  • History of a prior child with chromosomal abnormalities.
  • History of recurrent miscarriages (more than 3 consecutive spontaneous abortions of less than 20 weeks gestation).
  • Recurrent  IVF failure attempts.
  • Carriers of X-linked disease.

In order to screen for gene defects, as is the case of b-thalassemia, genetic analysis of the embryo is performed through PCR technique after biopsy is performed.
